There
are three different types of lampshades: hardbacks,
parchment, and silks. |
 |
All
types come in a wide variety of shapes and styles.
(see common frames styles) |
 |
Each shape and style is available in a large selection
of sizes. |
 |
Hardback lampshades are constructed by laminating
a fabric or paper onto a plastic inner liner called
"styrene". |
 |
Hardback lampshades have a wire ring at the top
and the bottom of the lampshade |
 |
The
top wire ring typically has some type of a fitter
or washer that attaches the lampshade to the lamp.
(see common fitters) |
 |
The
laminated fabric or paper is attached to the two
rings and is then glued together |
 |
Parchment
lampshades are similar to hardback lampshades and
are made of paper, but without styrene. |
 |
Parchment
lampshades allow for greater flexibility in terms
of custom paint finishes, designs, and specialty
effects. |
 |
Silk
shades are not necessarily made of a silk fabric.
|
 |
Silk
shades can be made of a variety of materials including
silk, blends, cotton, linen, denim, etc. |
 |
Silk
shades are made of an inner fabric lining and an
outer fabric stretched over a full wire frame with
wires connecting the top and bottom rings. |
 |
Our
wire frame are "hand wrapped" with a special
cotton fabric wrap, to which the lining and the
outer fabric is hand-sewn. (most are glued or taped) |
 |
The
full wire frame construction of silk shades allows
for flexibility in producing a wider variety of
more interesting frame designs in terms of shapes,
including curves, notches, and scallops, etc. that
would be impossible with a hardback (styrene) lampshade. |
